When The Wheels On The Bus Don't Go Round And Round: What Happens Next
A popular children's song is "The Wheels on the Bus (Go Round and Round)." Yet, what happens when the wheels on the bus do not go round and round? Another verse talks about how the doors on the bus open and shut, but what happens when the doors do not open and shut as they should? If you have ever been curious about everything on a bus that moves constantly throughout the day and what happens when these moving parts do not move, here is what happens next.
The Bus Driver Calls the Depot
The bus driver has to call the depot to report issues with the bus's moving parts. This includes wheels, doors, windshield wiper blades, and everything else typically mentioned in the children's song. The appointed city officials in charge of all bus matters make a call to put the bus out of order and send a new bus to pick up all of the old bus's passengers. If the problem is a minor one that does not endanger the safety of the passengers and the bus can complete its outbound route back to the depot, then they usually decide to put a different bus on that route to cover it the rest of the day while the bus with the problem goes into the repair garage.
People Vacate the Bus
Instead of telling people to "get onboard" or "move on back" as the driver does in the children's song, the driver in this situation asks people to vacate the bus when a replacement bus arrives. If the weather is neither too hot nor too cold, and the bus can drop passengers at a bus stop shelter, then the driver may tell everyone to get off the bus and wait for the replacement bus while he/she takes this bus to the repair garage. If the problem is with a wheel, then the driver has to wait for a very special tow truck to come and get the bus, in which case everyone has to get off the bus regardless of where the bus stopped.
With the Bus in the Garage, Repairs Begin
Bus service technicians are bus repair people who have special training and education in the repair of buses. Most bus service technicians work for the city or for bus touring companies and school bus companies. The technicians work quickly to fix and restore the wheels on the bus and anything else that is not moving properly. Then the bus returns to its usual line of daily work.
